The body of the Nikon D80 is very similar in size to several other Nikon cameras, especially the entry level D50 and anybody upgrading from this model will feel very much at home with the newer camera. The layout of controls on both follow the same basic pattern and while the Nikon D80 does feature an additional control wheel and some changes to existing buttons there should be little adapting. The weight distribution within the body has changed slightly from other recent models, but the overall mass is actually less – 585 grams without its battery and memory card.

Its 10.2 mega pixels mean that the Nikon D80 offers greater resolution than previous models. The optical view finder is also larger than on previous models and the magnification has been increased to 0.94x. This makes it easier to adjust menu settings without resorting to the LCD screen. The large view finder and 11-point focus system make composing Nikon D80 images easy. Auto focus is established quickly.
